The geezer at Leytonstone station has just been sentenced whether he's insane or not, another joke of a sentence.

He's been sent to a hospital because he is insane. The securest hospital in the land. Speaking as someone who has spent time as an inpatient in a secure mental health facility (twice) it's not the easy option.

Plus if he is never safe he will never be released, the 8.5 years is the minimum term. Insanity judgements can be much harsher than sane judgements.

Most of you have a poor understanding of a life sentence, he might never get out, eight and half is the minimum!

Re: Life = 8 years and six months
There was a think on 5 Live about these kind of prison sentences last week. They are called indeterminate sentences and are handed out for people who haven't murdered but could be s threat if left in the streets.

He'll serve a minimum of 8.5 years and then will be reassessed every 2 years or so to see if he still poses a threat.

There are similar people who have served 16 years+ for violent crime in the past, behaved in prison but still have no sign of release.

I strongly suspect that this happened in, oh, I don't know, some touristy country in South-East Asia, It wouldn't have even got to trial.

He would have quietly disappeared and ended up as crocodile food.

Problem solved. No worries about a repeat offence.

Barbaric & uncivilised? Just how do you think you get all your designer clobber at such knock-down prices???

HaHa.

Unfortunately Judge Nicholas Hilliard lacked your erudite humour.

He said while he accepted Mire was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia at the time of the offence, he also believed he had been motivated by events in Syria.

In other words, because Muslims were being bombed in Syria, he was going to attack civilians here to intimidate a section of the public, to advance an extreme cause.

Though I suspect there will be many on here saying

"You aint no judge bruv."

In this case the Judge was not fooled, He concluded Mire was both mad and bad. Thus a life sentence but to start in Broadmoor.

Maybe being a strict muslim in a western country must, by definition qualify you for a schizo ticket.

That's a pretty big gap in lifestyle/mentality to cover?

Peroni, I'm not, but what was he charged with and what is the maximum sentence/parole conditions?

Probably attempted murder, but the could have charged him with more, they also could have claimed that the offence was racially/relgiously motivated which, I believe raises the bar on the tariff.

Could be appealed by the Home Sec.

Re: Life = 8 years and six months
He didn't kill anyone did and he's a nutjob sent to Broadmoor, so he won't be going anyhwere until at least he's no longer a nutter. The 'throw the key away' attitude shouldn't be for every case.

8 years and 6 months is the earliest he can be considered for parole, no?
